Coronavirus cases cross 16,000 in Romania, and death toll passes 1,000

Romanian authorities on Thursday said 16,002 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since the outbreak began in March and 1,016 have died from the virus.

The Strategic Communication Group said that 220 new cases had been reported in the last 24 hours. The number of fresh cases has slightly dropped in recent days.

The new cases include 21 Sri Lankans who are employed at a clothing factory in the eastern city of Focsani. They were taken to a local hospital, and those with symptoms will be hospitalized, hospital spokesman Gabriela Negoita said.

Almost 8,000 patients have recovered from the virus.

Some 228 patients are receiving medical care in imtensive care units.

There are more than 14,300 people in institutionalized quarantine in Romania, while 19,000 people are in self isolation at home and under medical supervision,

Outside Romania, 2,855 have tested positive for COVID-19, and 102 Romanians have succumbed to the virus.
