Romania has the highest number of measles cases in the European Union and one of teh highest rates in Europe, according to the World Health Organization.
The government has been pushing vaccination for children and Health Minister Alexandru Rafila has warned that communities where vaccination rates are low are at risk of outbreaks.
According to WHO statistics, the incidence of measles in Romania is 239.94 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Romania’s health ministry says 15,763 measles cases were registered between January 1, 2023, and May 19. Sixteen people have died.
The outbreak began in February 2023 and was declared a national measles epidemic on December 5. In 2023, out of 2,361 measles cases reported to ECDC by EU/EEA countries, some 1,755 cases or about three-fourths of cases.
Kazakhstan has the most cases in the region,with 36,292 registered between March 2023 and April 2024. Azerbaijan reported nearly 29,000 cases and Russia reported almost 19,000.
