Coronavirus cases surpass 1,000 cases for third day in a row in Romania, record number of patients in intensive care

Romania on Friday reported more than 1,000 cases of coronavirus for the third consecutive day, with a record number of Covid-19 patients being treated in intensive care.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 1,119 new infections in the past 24 hours. Some 4.87% of the 22.964 people tested came up positive, a lower ratio than Thursday but not significantly so.

The worst affected areas were the southern county of Arges which saw 101 new cases. There has been a spike in the county in recent weeks with sporadic outbreaks around the county.

Bucharest reported 105 new cases, while the southern county of Dambovita had 70 new infections.

Twenty-four people succumbed to the virus in the past day.  Two were in their 40s. Everyone who died had underlying health conditions. The death toll now stands at 2,150.

Romania has confirmed 42,394 cases of the disease since the pandemic began, of which 25,349 have recovered.

Every county in Romania reported at least one case of the novel coronavirus in the last day.

There are about 5,900 patients hospitalized including 301 who are in ICU.

Romania has carried out over a million tests since the pandemic began, Some 9,700 of the last batch of tests were people who asked to be tested.

There are currently 845 confirmed cases of coronavirus in self isolation at home, and 1,420 in institutionalized isolation.
