Romania reported 3,252 new coronavirus cases on Monday as test numbers dropped steeply over the weekend.

The Strategic Communication Group said on Monday that just over 8,000 tests were carried out in the past day, about one-fourth of average weekday numbers, giving an alarming positivity rate of 40.35%.

There were 1,289 Covid-19 patients needing intensive care treatment and about 12,400 hospital beds occupied by SARS-CoV-2 patients.

Some 109 Covid-19 patients _ 60 men and 49 women   _ died in the past 24 hours, including two in their 30s, six in their 40s and 13 in their fifties.

Five patients didn’t have underlying health conditions such as heart disease, cancer of diabetes.

Bucharest reported 556 cases, more than anywhere else, but far lower than last week when weekday numbers shot up to 2,000 a day. Monday’s figure is likely the result of fewer tests being performed.

The Black Sea Constanta region, another Covid-19 hotspot reported 303 cases, despite a local lockdown which has restricted people’s movements.

Bucharest maintained a high infection rate of 6.9 cases per 1,000 for the past fortnight, while Ilfov, the county next to Bucharest registered 6.49 cases per 1,000 residents.

Constanta county in eastern Romania had 6.49 cases per 1,000.
