Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu says he has sent a special envoy to Mar-a-Lago, for informal discussions with representatives of the Trump administration, adapting Bucharest’s diplomatic approach to new political dynamics.

It comes as Bucharest seeks to “adapt to the new system” HotNews and Adevarul reported. Members of Trump’s team including Vice President JD Vance have been critical of Romania’s decision to cancel last year’s presidential elections after reports of Russian interference. Moscow denies meddling.

“I.. have a person that I sent to America,” Romania’s prime minister said Wednesday, explaining that  traditional diplomatic methods were no longer effective. “We are all trying to get out of the bubble that has worked so far. The Trump administration works differently.”

The identity of the US-based envoy has since become public. Dragoş Sprînceană who runs a truck transportation firm in the United States.

He is a member of the Republican Party’s Executive Committee in Palm Beach and has been a supporter of Donald Trump since his first term. Sprînceană, 45, previously supported hard-right presidential candidate Călin Georgescu. He later reported receiving death threats allegedly from Georgescu’s followers after announcing his own political ambitions in Romania.

Ciolacu said that there was another Romanian, whose identity he did not reveal.

“There are two Romanians, one from Romania, one settled in America. He did not go on government money. Both are on their own money,” Ciolacu said, adding that interim President Ilie Bolojan was informed of the mission.

Last month, the prime minister said his government was considering appointing a special envoy to the U.S. to communicate with the Trump administration.
