Hundreds of thousands in Romania have lost their jobs since the coronavirus pandemic, authorities said.
Employers have terminated some 350,000 employment contracts since Romania declared a state of emergency on March 16, according to the labor ministry.
More than 60,000 jobs have been lost in the retail sector and auto repairs, 61,000 in manufacturing, and 51,000 in the construction sector, national news agency, Agerpres reported.
Before the health crisis, there were 350,000 Romanians actively seeking a job at the end of February.
Prime Minister Ludovic Orban says 350,000 Romanians have returned from abroad and are expected to look for jobs in Romania.
Before the pandemic, there were some 5 million employees in Romania.
Some 891,000 people have been furloughed during the crisis, 260,338 from manufacturing, 158,000 from retail and car repairs, and 113,000 from hotels and restaurants.
