Social media giant Facebook has partnered with Romanian police to help find missing children in Romania.
Romania became the 24th country to join Facebook’s “Amber Alert” program which is an emergency missing child alert.
In Romania, police call it a “Child Abduction Alert”.
Police issue the alert when a child that is under 18 is abducted and is “at imminent risk of harm” said Emily Vacher, director of Facebook’s Trust &Security team in a video.
.Facebook will share the information with people who are in the search area about the missing child. The information will appear in people’s newsfeeds who are in the area, she said.
“When a child goes missing, every minute matters ,” Ms Vacher said.
“This new system will get the information to the right people at the right time,” she said.
The alert will be accompanied by a link to a police press release with relevant details about the case. This could be a description of the child and how she or he was dressed. It could also include a description of a vehicle.
Since Romania initiated thee “Child Abduction Alert” in 2011, a total of eight alerts have been issued. In all the cases, the children were found.
In 2019, there were more than 2,800 cases of missing children, including those that went missing several times. The majority of cases were resolved.
Police only posted seventeen cases. This is because the family has to agree for the case to bee made public, Digi24 reported.
The “Child Abduction Alert” is similar to the “Amber Alert: which is used in child abduction cases in the U.S.
