Romania has reported 388 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the third highest daily figure this month.
The Strategic Communication Group said Tuesday that the cumulative number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Romania had climbed to 26,970.
Seventeen patients died in the past 24 hours, 12 men and seven women. The death toll stands at 1,651.
There are 205 patients being treated in intensive care, an increase since Monday, the group said.
Romania has seen an increase in cases in recent weeks after the Covid-19 lockdown was relaxed and malls, parks and outdoor restaurants reopened.
Prime Minister Ludovic Orban said Monday that the government would not lift more restrictions on July 1 as planned, dashing hopes for restaurant owners whose business has been badly hit by the four-month health crisis.
Authorities are concerned about pandemic fatigue which has led to a sense of anger or apathy among some who are loath to continue to respect infection prevention measures.
Some people say they are worn out by the measures and have begun to let their guard down, putting them and those around them at higher risk of infection.
Compliance with rules designed to keep the virus as bay is patchy, with some people not wearing face masks properly in enclosed public spaces or failing to respect physical distancing rules.
Despite the increase in cases, authorities said Tuesday that 20,100 people have recovered from the virus which hit Romania in late February.
There are now about 900 people in institutionalized quarantine and about 62,000 people in self-isolation at home under medical supervision.
