A Romanian court has rejected an appeal made by online influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate to be freed from arrest on charges of human trafficking, rape, and organized crime saying the pair were a flight risk.
The brothers and two women were arrested on Dec. 29 and have been in detention after a judge extended their arrest period from 24 hours to 30 days.
On Tuesday, they appeared in court in Bucharest to appeal against their detention. The court heard arguments from Tate’s lawyers for their release, which included that the Tate brothers have small children in Romania, accor
The judge stated that the brothers are at risk of evading investigations and that they could “leave Romania and settle in countries that do not allow extradition.”
The Tates have denied the accusations against them.
The brothers arrived at Bucharest’s Court of Appeal on Tuesday morning handcuffed to each other.
Prosecutors can now seek to extend the detention period for the 36-year-old former kickboxer and controversial influencer to 180 days.
