The street where Russia’s consulate  s located might be changed to Alexei Navalny Street in honor of Russia’s most famous critic of the Kremlin who died at a prison in the Arctic Circle last week.

The initiative which came up a meeting of the City Council was put forward by the Bucharest branch of the Save Romanian Union.

Its representative said he would formally propose changing the street name from Tuberose Street to Alexei Navalny Street.

„It’s not just a symbolic gesture. It is a clear message that we support the fight for freedom, justice and democracy. It is an expression of our solidarity with all those who, like Alexei Navalny, risk their freedom and even their lives to defend their country from corruption and authoritarianism,” said Vlad Voiculescu, chairman of USR Bucharest.

„The decision will force Russians to put his name on their official documents… In order to adopt the decision, the majority vote in the General Council of Bucharest and the Prefect’s opinion are required,” he said in a Facebook post, announcing that a petition had been launched.
