Coronavirus death toll in Romania reaches 156

Five more people have died from coronavirus on Monday bringing the total to 156, authorities said.

The three latest deaths were people aged from 66 to 72, the Strategic Communication Group said. Some of them had underlying health conditions including diabetes and high blood pressure which make people more vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19.

The number of coronavirus cases in Romania climbed to 3,864 on Sunday, the last available figures.

Starting Monday, some local authorities will make it compulsory wear some form of face covering in public in a bid to halt the spread of the disease.

The counties of Vaslui and Maramures said residents will have to wear a mask or a scarf covering their mouths and noses in public places, or risk a fine. Galati county in eastern Romania was the first authority to impose the rule.

Other countries in the region including Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have already made it compulsory to wear face coverings in public. Many Romanians already wear face masks when they leave their homes.
