One of the wealthiest businessmen in Hungary has recently inaugurated a private airport in central Romania, connecting it to Budapest.

The airport in Remetea, Harghita county, was reportedly opened on the same day as a meeting between Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban and Romanian counterpart Marcel Ciolacu, reports Romania Insider.

A passenger plane of the Hungarian airline Aeroexpress, capable of transporting up to 30 people, was the first to land, on a test flight, at the airport still under construction, according to the Hungarian news agency MTI, as reported by Hirado.hu and cited by Digi24. It came in from Budapest in 90 minutes and, despite being a private flight, still passed through border control at Cluj-Napoca – „for now”, write press releases, indicating that this measure is likely to be circumvented in the future.

Aeroexpress, founded last year, launched its first flights in the fall of 2022, and since then has been operating four flights a week between Budapest and Cluj-Napoca, which are regularly full, the release also states.

Attila Balázs boasts an estimated fortune of over 80 million euros. He is the head of the Bayer Group, said that from next year he intends to launch two daily flights between Remetea and Budapest. One of these will provide connections for the group’s businesses, while the second will serve passengers from around the world, he stated. He himself was born in Remetea.

He is close to Fidesz government in Hungary. The Hungarian publication Válaszonline called Attila Balázs „the new comet of NER” (National Cooperation System, a political community created by Fides), and noted that he has close ties with István Tiborcz (Hungarian businessman, owner of the group of investment and real estate development companies BDPST Group, son-in-law of Viktor Orbán).
