Romania’s foreign minister said Sunday there’s no imminent danger of the country being dragged into a conflict with Russia, seeking to reassure Romanians who are rattled about the prospect of a war.

Tensions have ratcheted up over fears that Russia will invade Ukraine and  Romania, which is a member of NATO, and shares a 600-kilometer border with Ukraine will be drawn into the conflict.

The U.S and France have promised to deploy troops to the country to beef up NATO’s eastern border.

A few dozen elite U.S troops and equipment landed  Sunday in southeastern Poland near the border with Ukraine  following President Joe Biden’s orders to deploy 1,700 soldiers there.

Romania’s Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu said that in the event  Russia stages a military invasion in Ukraine “there will be a response given to the Russian Federation.”

“We have already prepared a response and it will be delivered in terms that I hope Russia is aware of, and won’t want such a response.”

“We are talking about a response from NATO. It will be a proportional but consistent consolidation on the Eastern Flank,” he said.

„At this moment there is no danger of Romania being dragged into a military  conflict with Russia as a result of regional developments,” he added.

“There will also be a reaction from the European Union with a packet of robust and very substantial sanctions.”

He said the sanctions would punish „Russian individuals financially and commercially, people who are part of the decision-making process” in Russia.

“It will have massive consequences and severe costs for the Russian Federation.”
