One person dies after storm hits Romanian capital

One person died, trees were uprooted, traffic was blocked and a flight was diverted on Tuesday after a storm hit the Romanian capital and surrounding areas.

The storm swept the capital and surrounding villages after the hottest day of the year when temperatures rose to 38C, tearing up trees and knocking over signs and municipal rubbish bins.

A person who was in a car was killed in the village of Găneasa near the capital after a tree fell on the car he was in.

A flight that that was due to land in the Bucharest Henri Coanda Airport was diverted to the southern city of Craiova due to the weather conditions.

Traffic police said that traffic was halted on parts of a ring road after a high voltage pole fell onto the highway.

“A tree collapsed on a moving car and a man was trapped inside. … Emergency services said the victim had injuries incompatible with life,” according to an announcement from the  Emergency Services Inspectorate.
