Meteorologists warn that there is a fourth degree – meaning high risk – of avalanches in the Ţarcu and Godeanu mountains.

„In the first two days of this week, there were significant precipitations, predominantly snow, which locally exceeded 60-70 l/sqm. Against the background of the intense wind from the NW, which was over 120 km/h, a significant part of the snow was shattered and deposited in the valleys and sheltered areas, where significant old deposits were present. The layer deposited then, up to 40-50 cm, has low strength and weak adhesion to the old one below. In the area of the ridges, cornices and slabs of wind occur, which can break easily at any kind of overloads. Both spontaneously, but especially with overloads, the conditions are favorable for triggering medium and large avalanches. The risk of triggering avalanches will remain high (4)”, meteorologists explain.

The same risk exists in the mountains of Făgăraș, Rodnei, Bucegi, Parâng, Șureanu, Călimani and Bistriței.

In recent years, the Romanian Mountain Rescue has repeatedly expressed its concern regarding a rising death toll in the context of hiking and skiing incidents. Hundreds of rescue missions take place per year.
