President Nicușor Dan reassured Romanians ‘they have no reason to worry’
US tankers or refueling aircraft, US military, and military equipment are to be deployed in Romania to back the US-Israel war against Iran, the president said Wednesday.
Speaking after a meeting of the country’s top defense council, Dan said: “We are talking about refueling aircraft, as has already been discussed publicly, space, monitoring equipment and satellite communications equipment, in correlation with the Deveselu shield.
This equipment is defensive and is not equipped with proper weapons.
To the extent that Parliament approves it (Eds: lawmakers will vote Wednesday), they will be deployed on the basis of the Romania-US partnership, a collaboration similar to a collaboration that other NATO countries do.
I assure Romanians that they have no reason to worry. Their country is safe.’
Today we had a meeting with three topics. First of all, we discussed the situation in the Middle East from a military perspective, with the responsible institutions, with short, medium and long-term forecasts
We also discussed the situation of Romanians in the area. This is one of our important concerns. So far, about 5,700 people have returned from the area with the help of the Foreign Ministry.
And we discussed the political side of this conflict. Romania, together with the European countries, is trying to stop this war in different ways.
The second item on the agenda concerned the economic side, growth in the international oil market.
On gas, the government has already adopted a cap as of 1 April.
The request was reportedly made by the Pentagon, Digi reported.
Neither the Pentagon nor the US State Department have officially confirmed the information.
According to sources quoted by Antena 3 CNN, the United States asked Romania to be able to use the Mihail Kogălniceanu Black Sea base for US operations in the war in Iran, for logistical operations and for refueling aircraft that carry out attacks on targets in the Islamic Republic.
The Mihail Kogălniceanu air base was also used in 2025 by the air force, in the context of the then conflict between Israel and Iran.
Romania signed an agreement with the US in 2005 to allow the stationing and rotation of US forces in Romania, the use of Romanian military bases. It was later ratified by the Romanian Parliament through a law, which became Law 268 of 2006.
“Basically, through this law, the Parliament approves a general framework that allows: such as, for example, the one under discussion now, at Mihail Kogălniceanu, or, why not, the one in Câmpia Turzii, the conduct of exercises and so on,” ex defense minister Mihai Fifor told, Antena 3 CNN.
