Romania outlaws chinchilla & mink fur production

Chinchilla and mink fur farming will be illegal in Romania from 2027 on.

On Tuesday, the Romanian Parliament voted with an overwhelming majority of 217 in favor of the ban, with just six against and nine abstaining or declining to vote.

This would make Romania the 22nd country in Europe and 16th EU Member State to ban fur farming.

The bill was proposed after Humane Society International exposed abusive conditions on fur farms: these animals are caged and kept away from water, which is in fact their natural habitat; what’s more, they are kept in filth and seem traumatized by human contact.

The ban will implicitly tackle the environmental and human health hazards linked to fur farming, such as the spread of zoonotic diseases.

The European Commission has agreed to make a decision by March 2026.

There are estimated to be around 1,000 active fur farms in the EU for mink, fox and racoon dogs, with approximately 7.7 million animals.

There is currently no specific EU animal welfare legislation covering animals kept for fur production.

However, animals in fur farms are protected the umbrella of EU regulations for animals kept for farming purposes.
