Romanian police find 80,000 packets of contraband cigarettes in parked truck

Romanian law enforcement officials have discovered more than  80,000 packets of contraband cigarettes hidden away in the back of an abandoned truck.

The stash was found in the back of a truck with Hungarian license plates.

Prosecutors searched the vehicle on Sunday evening after getting a court warrant.

Police were suspicious about what was inside the vehicle and asked prosecutors to get involved. It had been abandoned near the village of Halmagiu in western Romania.

Prosecutor Diana Ilca told Agerpres the contraband cigarettes came from Belarus.

She said a total of 82,365 packets of NZ Gold cigarettes were found without a tax label,

Prosecutors have carried out searches in 14 houses in the village.

“In some places, we found contraband cigarettes,” she said.

Romanian police have not managed to identify the truck driver. The investigation is ongoing.
