Romanian President Nicusor Dan says he does not see any risk of withdrawal of American troops from the eastern flank, given that there is talk of the Russian threat.

Speaking at a two-day summit of the defensive military alliance, he said there was an attempt to recalibrate security contributions between the US and the other partners.

The Romanian president was responding to questions whether he’d discussed the American military presence in Europe and Romania with US officials and whether the troop situation would be reviewed. .

“Of course this will be a short, medium and long-term discussion from this moment on. Rebalancing means that too. But by the fact that there is frank  talk of the Russian threat, I do not see a risk of withdrawal of troops from the eastern flank at this moment,” he said.

Asked about the atmosphere at the opening dinner of the NATO summit after  US President Donald Trump accused allies of lack of loyalty, he said the mood was ‘relaxed.’

“There is always a difference between politicians and people. That is, people socialize, discuss, laugh. This is the social language in the period we live in. And one is one, another is another. But last night there was a relaxed atmosphere,” he said.
