Hundreds of Romanians protested Sunday evening in Bucharest and other cities for the fifth night in a row demanding reforms to the justice system.
In Bucharest, demonstrators gathered in University Square and marched towards Victory Square. Among them are elderly people, but also parents with babies. Some of them have a waved the Romanian flag.
They held banners saying: “Free justice! Independent Justice”, “We want justice without telephone calls”.
Protesters chanted “Out with the Mafia in the country!”, and “Justice, not corruption”.
The protests came after a damning investigation on the state of justice in Romania, which alleged that the judiciary was captured by an interest group of magistrates allied with politicians. Journalists called the testimonies from within the justice system “of unprecedented gravity”.
Some 700 magistrates have signed a letter calling for urgent reforms and protests have been held around Romania.
