The prime minister of Belgium has called out Russia for interfering in Romania’s presidential elections that saw a previous unknown NATO skeptic catapulted to victory with the aid of TikTok and a ‘foreign state actor.’

Premier Alexander De Croo joins a list of leaders that include previous Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and President  Klaus Iohannis who have openly named Russia as the foreign actor that intervened on behalf of soil scientist, Calin Georgescu. Moscow denies meddling in the Nov. 24 election.

In a wide-ranging speech on Friday at the Harvard European Conference, at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Mr. De Croo said.

“When we say that we respect democracy, it means that we don’t intervene in elections that are happening in certain countries. That we respect that. That we respect the outcome of elections. I think we’ve been respecting those outcomes very well from the European side.

“But please do not intervene in elections! And Russia has intervened in Romania, we call it out. If as partners we intervene in each other’s elections, I think we cannot allow that.”

Declassified Romanian intelligence reports revealed that Russia has intervened in the election  in what Mr. Iohannis called “a complex and sophisticated” way. Two  days before the December runoff between Mr.Georgescu, 62 and Elena Lasconi, a centrist mayor, the Constitutional Court canceled  the election.

Romania’s government  rescheduled presidential elections for May 4 with an expected runoff on May 18.
