Bratislav Živković, a Serb mercenary declared persona non grata in Romania in 2017 for spying for Russia, has reportedly been killed during battles in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
Russian Telegram channels confirmed Živković’s death, saying he’d died “in fierce battles for the liberation of Kursk Oblast”. The Serbian government has yet to comment on the reports.
Živković had been fighting for Russia against Ukraine since 2014 as the leader of a Serb nationalist paramilitary organization, the Chetniks.
In 2017, he was expelled from Romania on a court order for espionage after he took photos of military radar positions on the Black Sea coast and provided their GPS coordinates to Russian contacts.
A year later, he was imprisoned in Serbia on grounds of participating in military operations for a foreign state. He was later released.
