Syrian tries to light self on fire outside of Bucharest Israeli Embassy

A 34-year-old Syrian national attempted to set himself ablaze yesterday with an incendiary bottle in front of Israel’s Embassy in Bucharest.

Judicial sources say that he claimed to have done this as a response to being denied audience at the embassy.

Nobody was hurt, but the man destroyed a poster on the embassy’s door as he flew into a rage at the embassy, before setting himself on fire.

Anti-terror officers immediately intervened at the scene to subdue and immobilize the man, who was then taken to the 14th Police Precinct, reports Act Media.

“From the data I have, this wasn’t an anti-Semitic act, he appears to have been dissatisfied about the grant of residence, but all these aspects will be cleared by the checks that are being carried out now. His criminal record will definitely be verified,” Romanian Police spokesman Georgian Dragan declared on Monday.

Police stresses that the Syrian’s action was not related to Israel’s intervention in Gaza, but was about a personal dissatisfaction. But Israel’s embassy suggested that terrorist motives weren’t out of the question.

“Police Precinct 14 is carrying out extensive checks and investigations to determine the circumstances of the man’s action and of course, the necessary legal measures will also be instructed,” said Dragan.
