Three people died on Friday after a truck slammed into a car near the Transylvanian town of Avrig when a tire exploded and the driver lost control of his vehicle.

„Preliminary investigations by traffic police established that the driver of the dump truck, a 67-year-old man…. for reasons to be established… collided with an oncoming car,  driven by a 38-year-old man. There was a 42-year-old passenger traveling in the car. Following the accident, the dump truck left the bridge plunged close to a railway line where it overturned. Unfortunately, all three people died,” the Sibiu County Police Inspectorate said.

Traffic police who are investigating the circumstances in which the accident occurred, said it appears one of the truck driver’s tire’s exploded, and the vehicle veered into a car, which then flew off a viaduct near the railway embankment.

Rail traffic was also blocked on line between Sibiu and Brasov,” Luciana Lazar, spokesperson for the Sibiu County Police Inspectorate (IPJ), said.

The drivers of the truck and car died as did the passenger, Andreea Stefan, spokesperson for the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) Sibiu.

Road traffic on DN 1 and rail resumed Friday evening after it was disrupted by the accident.

In 2019, more than 1,800 people died in road accidents, the National Statistics Institute said. There were more than 31,000 road accidents that year, which resulted in injury to 41,500 people, and 1,864 fatalities.
