Ukraine and neighboring Romania on Friday signed an agreement to work together on grain exports, following Russia’s departure last month from the U.N.-backed grain deal.

The Russia deal had allowed for the safe wartime transport of foodstuffs across the Black Sea. Ukraine is one of the world’s major grain producers and its exports play a vital role in global food security.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said he hopes as much as 60 percent of Ukraine’s grain exports might pass through Romania following the new agreement. Ukraine will use the Sulina Channel in the Danube Delta and the Black Sea port of Constanta, the Romanian premier said.

„We will stand alongside Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Mr. Ciolacu said. „We hope more  than 60 percent of Ukraine’s grain exports might pass though Romania– from 2 million tons a month now to 4 million tons.”

He also announced the opening of a new border crossing at the town of Sighetu Marmatiei in northwest Romania.
