The Elie Wiesel Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania has invited architects to submit their design proposals for a Holocaust museum in the Romanian capital.

The design competition that was launched Monday is open to an international audience, the institute said.

The organizers are looking for the best design and building project for permanent exhibitions to be housed in the museum which will be on Bucharest’s Calea Victoriei, a main artery.

The museum is being built with government and European Union funds and private donations.

Architects interested in the project can apply on this link.

The museum is expected to be completed and open its doors to the public in 2024.

The mission of the new museum, which is coordinated by the Elie Wiesel institute is to promote the history, culture and traditions of Jews in the country and shine light on their contribution to modernizing Romanian society.

President Klaus Iohannis gave the green light a year ago, more than 70 years after the end of World War II.

An international commission headed by the late Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel concluded in 2004 that between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews were killed in Romania and areas it controlled during the war, as an ally of Nazi Germany.

Romania has only recently started to come to terms with its role in the extermination of Jews, admitting for the first time in 2003 that it had taken part.

The museum will be built in the Banloc-Goodrich building on Calea Victoriei, which was made available to the Elie Wiesel Institute last year.
