Aggressive behavior in traffic can now be reported on a new online platform introduced by Romania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The platform www.hub.mai.gov.ro, is presently only available in Romania.
Romania has the highest death rate in the EU associated with car accidents — at an alarming, near-double rate. In response, the EU wants to half its traffic-related deaths by 2030.
Traffic is also heavily congested in Romania, with a huge number of citizens owning one or multiple cars. Efforts to decongest have been made in major cities such as Cluj, which offers free public transport every Friday of the week.
Reports must include evidence of some sort, be it through photos, videos, or audio recordings, which demonstrate the date, time, and location of the incident.
Under new and stricter regulations, dangerous actions which can be reported include:
- Repeated lane-switching for speed,
- Turning a vehicle with a handbrake,
- Excessive wheel-spinning in stationary,
- Hounding or tailgating,
- Sudden braking without reason,
- Repeated honking or flashing,
- Using only one wheel on motorcycles/mopeds,
- Intentional skidding,
- Aggressive revving.
Not only will offenders be fined with several hundred lei, they will also be subject to a 30-day suspension of their driver’s license.
