All’s well that ends well…? Teachers’ unions accept government offer

Romanian trade unions decided to suspend the general teachers’ strike, which has been going on for three weeks (since May 22), after the Romanian government’s latest bargain to hike teachers’ wages. For now, this means a 25-30% wage hike, for the lowest wage of gross 1,300 lei – with a significant increase promised in 2024, meaning half of the wage differential to the target wages set under the existing legislation. The support personnel in schools will receive wage hikes as well.

This means that incipient wages will not sink below the economy average. There has been talk of an EU-funded annual bonus of $325 until 2027. For perspective, Romanian teacher earn approximately 520 USD per month, with the Romanian average being around $980.

The unions punctuated the matter by stating that if the “principles included in the emergency ordinance regarding salaries in education are not applied in the text of the new wage law, the strike will be resumed”, reports Romania Insider.
