Bear ‘greets’ tourist who stopped car to take a picture in Romanian mountains

Tourists who stopped their  car to get a picture of brown bears got a shock when one of the animals came up to their open car window and stuck its head inside.

Video shot by someone in a vehicle behind shows one of the bear going up to the open front passenger window getting on its hind legs and briefly putting its head inside.

It immediately got down and there did not appear to be any interaction beyond that.

Bears have descended into resorts and towns in search of food. In some instances, people have also gone in search of bears.

The number of reported bear attacks has also increased, as some officials press for a reduction in the bear population.

Romania banned the trophy hunting of bears and other large carnivores in 2016. Exceptions have been granted for the sake of controlling the population.

Romania is about to conduct a census of bears using DNA as incidents with hungry bears descending into villages have angered rural residents.

There have been dozens of bear attacks over the past three years. Bears have been spotted at a train station, in a restaurant and on people’s land.

There are officially 6,000 bears in Romania, although the figure is disputed. Hunting activists say there are more and conservationists claims there are less.

Romania has more brown bears than any other European country apart from Russia.
