the main airport in the Romanian capital is closing one-quarter of its check-in desks for 10 months starting Monday. Passengers are recommended to arrive early to allow extra time while the work is in progress.
Otopeni Airport announced on Monday it was closing two “islands” with 52 desks each until August 2023, the National Airports Company said.
The closures are needed as authorities are currently modernizing the check-in luggage system.
The airport signed a two-year 21 million euro contract with French company Alstef Automation SAS to modernize check-in luggage system which is 20 years old, Hotnews reported.
„The most difficult period will be Oct. 2022 to Aug. 2023 when capacity will be reduced by 25%,” it said.
The new system will increase capacity by 40% and passengers will be able to use 12 self-service drop off points.
After the first part of the work is completed, capacity will be back to 100% and then 140%
The Airport Company says it was working to minimize inconvenience for passengers. It recommends passengers arrive three hours before their flight departs to complete all pre-flight formalities.
