Civicus, an international non-profit concerned with “strengthening citizen action and civil society around the world”, has included the United States on its first watchlist of 2025.
The watchlist concerns countries which the organization perceives as showing a rapid decline in civic freedoms, peaceful assembly, association, and expression.
Other new members of the unsavoury list are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Italy, Pakistan and Serbia. Members of recent years are Zimbabwe, Argentina, El Salvador and the United Arab Emirates.
Obviously, they hold Trump accountable — particularly for mass termination of federal employees, withdrawal from the WHO and the UN Human Rights council, and the freezing of aid.
Many, including Civicus, have expressed concern at the international change of perception towards America as a beacon of human rights.
