Coronavirus cases cross 4,000 in Romania, with disease claiming 157 lives

 Romania confirmed 4,057 cases of the new coronavirus on Monday, and authorities said 157 had died from COVID-19.

There were 193 new cases in the past 24 hours, the Strategic Communication Group said.  

There are currently 179 people in intensive care in Romanian hospitals.

A total of 406 patients have recovered since the outbreak, authorities said.

Suceava has the highest number of cases, a total of 1,228 , while there are 566 cases in the capital, Bucharest.

Suceava, a region in northern Romania, became a hotspot for the virus following a massive outbreak at a hospital there. The disease spread among health workers and patients. The military has taken over the running of the facility and the city of 100,000 and surrounding area are under a strict lockdown.

At the other end of the scale, the central county of Harghita, a remote area where the majority of residents are members of the ethnic Hungarian community has three cases, the least in any Romanian county,

The majority of people who have succumbed to the virus were elderly or had underlying health conditions.

Some 23,850 people are in institutionalized quarantine, while 106,463 people are in self-isolation at home, authorities said.

Authorities have tested about 41,000 people so far for COVID-19.

Authorities fined about 9,500 people and companies in the last 24 hours for not respecting lockdown rules. Fines  totaled about 21.73 million lei.
