Coronavirus cases rise to 2,500 people in Romania, and cause 85 deaths as virus spreads to hospitals

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Romania rose to almost 2,500 on Wednesday, and authorities said 85 people had died from the disease since the outbreak began.

The Strategic Communications Group said that 215 new patients had tested positive in the past 24 hours. A total of 252 people have recovered from the illness since the outbreak.

The killer virus has also infected healthcare professionals with new infections reported in Bucharest and the badly-hit Suceava region in northern Romania which has been placed under lockdown.

There are currently 34 people in intensive care units in a serious condition.

The new figures came as the virus spread to the University Hospital in Bucharest, one of the largest hospitals in the capital.

Seventeen health workers and ten patients, have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus at the facility, authorities confirmed late Tuesday,

Some 500 people have been tested at the hospital since March 22, and healthcare officials are awaiting the results of about 100 of them.

Bucharest’s public health department is investigating how the situation occurred.

Elsewhere in the capital, 72 health workers at the Saint John Hospital in Bucharest were placed in isolation after a 62-year-old patient tested positive for COVID-19.

Romania has 285 health professionals who are infected with the virus, of which 181 are at the Suceava St. John the New Hospital. The city in northern Romania and surrounding area on Tuesday was put under a strict lockdown in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.

The number of people in institutionalized quarantine rose to 12,218 on Wednesday, with some 119,200 people in self-isolation at home.

Some 26,609 tests have been carried out.
