Coronavirus: In Romania, cases cross 1,000, deaths rise to 17

The number of coronavirus cases rose to 1,029 Thursday in Romania, while 17 people have died from the killer virus.

The Strategic Communication Group announced 123 new cases in the past 24 hours. The new patients are aged between 7 and 87. Ninety-four people have recovered since the outbreak began several weeks ago.

All 17 people who died had underlying health conditions, such as heart problems, diabetes or obesity, authorities said. Most were over 60.

There are currently 23 people in intensive care who are in a serious condition.

A total of 6,511 are in institutionalized quarantine, while 110,042 are in self-isolation at home.

Some 16,000 tests have been carried out so far, the latest figures show.

Forty-five tons of medical equipment have been distributed to Romanian  hospitals.
