Coronavirus. Romania spike continues with 269 new cases

Romania has recorded 269 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, with fewer tests being carried out than usual in the past day.

The Strategic Communication Group said 4,779 tests were conducted, meaning that 5.63% of those tested were diagnosed with Covid-19. That’s the highest percentage of positive tests since June 22.

Twenty-one people died in the past day, taking the total death toll to 1,634.

Romania has reported 26,582 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began in late February.

The rise in new cases comes as Romania relaxed a strict lockdown as people slowly return to the life they led before the pandemic.

Authorities are concerned that some people are not complying with mandatory masks in enclosed public spaces and physical distancing rules.

There have been 55 virus-related deaths in the past three days, and the number of patients being treated in intensive care was 210, the second day in a row when there have been more than 200 patients in intensive care units.

Despite the spike, nearly 19,000 patients have recovered from the virus.

There are 919 people in institutionalized quarantine and about 64,000 people in self-isolation at home under medical supervision.
