Covid-19 cases surged to another record high on Tuesday in Romania, with 15,037 new cases confirmed and 252 deaths.

The capital Bucharest posted 2,515 new cases, another negative record.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 1,480 patients in intensive care units, including 22 children.

Ilfov, which lies next to the capital reported 612 new cases and Cluj, in northwest Romania had 554 cases.

Timis in southwest Romania confirmed 507 new infections.

Cases have surged in the past month, reaching an all-time high on Tuesday. The more contagious delta variant and months when restrictions were eased are fuelling the spike.

Bucharest and Ilfov have an infection rate of more than 10 per 1,000 inhabitants which has triggered curfews and other restrictions.

Of the 252 deaths in the past 24 hours, 238 had underlying health conditions.

Some 227 of the people who died were unvaccinated, and 25 were immunized. Except for two, they all had pre-existent health issues.
