Eminent sociologist Lazăr Vlăsceanu passes away

Lazăr Vlăsceanu (1946 – 2024) passed away on Saturday, June 8.

He was one of Romania’s preeminent sociologists.

Vlăsceanu completed his PhD at UCL’s Faculty of Education in 1976, after which he joined the faculty of the University of Bucharest.

From 2008, he led the Chair of Sociology at the University of Bucharest.

He published several important books – for instance, the English-language title Decision and Innovation in Education.

He was adjunct director for the UNESCO-CEPES center for Higher Education, as well as Secretary of State responsible for the management and development policy of higher education. He was also prorector of the University of Bucharest.

Vlăsceanu also contributed to the Presidential Commission for analysis and elaboration of policies in education and research, which led to new education laws.

A mass will be held this evening, June 10, at 19:00 at Sf. Gheorghe Chapel on Calea Plevnei, no. 122, and the funeral service will take at the same location tomorrow, June 11, at 11 AM.
