Exhausted nurse resting in cardboard box, image of Romania’s overwhelmed medical system

A photo of an exhausted nurse slumped in a cardboard box in a Romanian hospital is the image of the country’s  healthcare system stretched to its limits by a deadly fourth wave of Covid-19 cases.

The photo of the unnamed nurse, dressed in a hazmat suit, her face covered, was taken on Sunday evening at the St Pantelimon Emergency Hospital in Bucharest.

She was resting for a few moments in a box surrounded by other boxes in the corner of a room with her feet under a curtain. There was nowhere else for her to rest at the overcrowded hospital, Ro Vaccinare, the government Covid platform said.

„Exhaustion….. a nurse at the St. Pantelimon hospital is resting for a few moments, taking a break from too many serious Covid-19 cases in the emergency room…..All the beds, chairs and tables are occupied. So? Emergencies continue to arrive. We hope this message reaches all of those who are still thinking about it,” Ro Vaccinare said.

Romania has seen a deadly fourth wave of coronavirus infections in recent weeks. Some 1,700 Covid-19 patients died from Oct 11 to Oct 15.

Some 261 Covid deaths were reported in the last 24 hours including a 19 and 20-year old who were not vaccinated. They had underlying health issues.

On Monday, there were 19,745 Covid-19 patients being treated in hospital of which 1,764 were in intensive care units.

“Please go and get vaccinated. It’s the best way to protect yourselves against Covid-19,” Ro Vaccinare said in the post.
