Romanians turned out in record numbers to vote in crucial parliamentary elections which could see the country continue on its pro-Western path or veer toward isolationalism and wavering commitment to the EU and NATO.
The CURS exit poll showed three largely pro-European parties winning 57% and Euroskeptic parties winning 30%.Two other parties may reach the 5% threshold while other parties didn’t get enough votes to enter parliament.
“Romanians showed it is a democratic country. Romanians confirmed that the Social Democratic Party is the principle party in Romania,” Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said after the exit polls.
Remus Ștefureac, who heads the INSCOP Research polling agency said there’s “a state of national emergency” after the surprise presidential first round.
Turnout was just 33.3% in 2020, but elections took place during lockdown.
