France’s Foreign Ministry described claims that it meddled in Romania’s presidemtial election as “completely unfounded” and a “diversionary maneuver from the real threats of interference targeting Romania.”
France’s foreign intelligence service, known as DGSE, has also strongly refuted the claims.
“The accusations circulating about an alleged interference by France in the presidential election in Romania are completely unfounded,” says the spokesman for the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
“France categorically rejects these accusations and calls on everyone to take responsibility, but above all, to respect Romanian democracy,” the spokesman said.
France’s reaction comes after nationalist George Simion who lost the May 18 second roun to Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan said that “international observers have seen interference not only from the Republic of Moldova, but also from the French state” in the Romanian elections.
In related news, a fabricated Euronews video which claims that Romania cautioned French authorities over interference in the presidential election runoff last Sunday has been circulating on social media in the aftermath of the vote.
The report fraudulently bears the Euronews logo and alleges that Romania’s Foreign Ministry sent the French government a “note of protest” for attempting to meddle in the presidential elections with the help of messaging app Telegram.
Euronews said it did not produce or publish the video, and our branding was copied without consent. It said its teams were working to ensure the video is removed from all social platforms.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania issued a statement on X “adamantly refuting” the content of the video falsely attributed to Euronews, and pointing to “a sustained campaign of foreign information manipulation and interference aimed at influencing Romania’s public opinion and more recently its elections.”
Completely unfounded allegations are circulating on Telegram and Twitter regarding alleged French interference in the Romanian presidential election.
