The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has nominated Ryan Gosling for best supporting actor for his performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

Lead actress Margot Robbie was left without a nomination for playing the titular character. Gerwig, who made more than $1.4 billion at the box office, also did not get a best director nomination.

„There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” Gosling wrote in a statement. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius.”

„To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement”, he added.

The irony of a man receiving this award, when Barbie is a film about female empowerment, has left the Greek choir of the internet’s collective voice reeling.

However, America Ferrera, who played mom Gloria in the film, earned a best supporting actress nomination.
