Police are hunting for a thief who stole three amputated legs from a Romanian hospital.

The gruesome theft happened on Feb. 10, with video footage from the hospital showing a man making off with the severed limbs in several plastic bags.

Police have not identified or found the macabre thief and the Cantacuzino Hospital was fined 4,400 lei (about 890 euros) for not reporting the incident when it happened. The theft took place on  Friday evening but was announced after 3 days later.

A junior doctor found one of the amputated limbs on a street near the hospital late  Friday and notified hospital management. It was recovered and returned to the refrigerated box for infectious waste. On Monday, two more limbs were found missing, hospital manager Iulian Brezean said.

“On the morning of 13.01.2025, when the refrigerated boxes in which forensic waste is stored was checked, it was discovered that two more packages which contained two amputated limbs were missing,” he said.

Police are using CCTV images to identify the thief, who took measures to conceal himself,  covering his face with a mask and wearing a hood.

From the images captured by CCTV, it appears that the thief climbed the fence of the Cantacuzino Institute and entered the space specially designed for the storage of medical waste.

Police have opened  a criminal case for robbery. In parallel, the Public Health Directorate is also conducting an investigation.
