A hospital treating former Romanian President Ion Iliescu said his condition had slightly improved two days after he was admitted to an intensive care unit in the capital.
The Agrippa Ionescu” Hospital said that Mr. Iliescu, 95, who served as president three times, was conscious and required ‘minimal oxygen.’
The hospital said he was suffering from lung disease making it harder for him to breathe easily. Doctors are continuing their investigations before establishing a final diagnosis, a statement said.
The former president who came to power during the 1989 revolution was admitted to intensive care on Monday afternoon with respiratory problems.
“The patient was hospitalized, and currently benefits from specialized medical care, in parallel with procedures for establishing the diagnosis,” the hospital which is under the jurisdiction of the Romanian intelligence service said.
According to medical sources, the former president has a chronic heart condition as well as other age-related medical conditions.
Mr. Iliescu is facing charges of crimes against humanity for his role in the revolution where more than 1,100 people died.
Sidelined by Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in the 1980s, he ran a publishing house at the time of the revolution and went on to be president three times.
In recent years, Iliescu has withdrawn from public life, with occasional posts on his personal blog.
In his last message on May 19, he congratulated independent candidate Nicuşor Dan for winning the presidential election.
