Heatwave alert announced this week in Romania

Meteorologists announced a heatwave alert, with scorching temperatures up to 38 Celsius forecast to sweep across Romania this week.

Meteorologists said highs will be between 34C and 38C and felt most acutely in low-lying areas such as the capital Bucharest.

The heatwave will affect Banat and Oltenia in the southwest and spread to Muntenia in the south and Dobrogea in the southeast before reaching south and central Moldova in the northeast, and Transylvania andi Crişana in the northwest.

Bucharest will feel the hottest temperatures, with a maximum of 38C on Thursday,

Overnight, temperatures will fall to 18 to 21 Celsius. Storms are expected on Tuesday and Friday afternoon.

July is known as ‘month of the oven’ in Romania.

Even mountainous areas won’t be spared the heatwave. Busteni in the southern Carpathians will have a high of 29 Celsius on Thursday while the central city of Brasov which is surrounded by  mountains will have a high of 31 Celsius.
