Homes flooded, 200 trees uprooted, multiple cars damaged by strong winds, rain

Gale force winds and rain have flooded people homes, uprooted 200 trees and caused  damage to 70 cars, authorities said Wednesday.

The storms on Tuesday hit the capital and south and many other areas of the country, the Department for Emergency Situations said, summing up the damage.

Some 25 places were affected in 14 counties. Thirty people needed to be evacuated from their homes in Bihor county which were flooded after heavy rain.

Authorities in the county were working to consolidate dams to keep out the water.

The bad weather hit Constanta and Braila in eastern Romania, Giurgiu in southern Romania,  Satu Mare in the northwest, and Hunedoara and Timis in western Romania.

In the capital, 30 homes and cellars were flooded and 153 trees were toppled by winds gusting up to  80 kilometers an hour.

About 50 buildings and 74 cars were damaged, authorities said. Some buildings  need to be consolidated, authorities said.

The village of Cociuba Mică  in northwest Romania was the worst affected by heavy rain. Thirty people were evacuated preventively. Most returned to their homes later, with six choosing to stay with relatives.

Rauil traffic was blocked on a main line running from the capital to the central city of Brasov after a tree fell on the track.

Several roads were also blocked after trees were uprooted.
