Largest wool processing factory in Europe to be built in Romania-agriculture ministry

The largest wool processing factory in Europe will be built in Romania by local investors as part of a state-funded scheme, the agriculture ministry has announced.

The funds will be used for a wool processing factory and acoustic and thermal insulation products made from wool, according to a statement. Plus, the investment also covers secondary products, such as lanolin, organic fertilizers in the form of pellets, or compost from washing wool.

The investors are from Olt county in southwest Romania and obtained some 182 million lei (36.9 million euros) from a 2022 government scheme financed by the economy ministry.

„A factory will be built under the LANA (wool in Romanian) Program, which we started in 2017. We support Romanians who want to invest in this field by creating mechanisms to collect wool from sheep farmers. Currently, letters of intent have been signed with farmers’ associations for 15,000 tons of raw wool”, Agrciculture Minister Petre Daea said.

The factory will have production hall of 12,500 square meters with three raw wool washing lines with a unit capacity of 1t/hour/line, which will include: centrifugation installations for the extraction of lanolin, two pellet lines, a water recycling and reintroduction station, two automatic lines for processing and packaging finished products and an energy production capacity through solar panels installed on the entire surface of the hall.
