Moldova’s EU path not dependent on separatist republic, says Borrell

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says Moldova’s future membership of the European Union does not hinge on developments in the breakaway republic of Transnistria.

Speaking at the start of the European Political Community summit in Moldova on Thursday he said that Chisinau has a clear journey to joining the EU and  „must work toward reforms to fulfill the path to integration.”

Asked if the Russian-backed separatist region of Transdnistria would be an obstacle to Moldova’s EU membership, Borrell said, „Moldova’s path is independent of what’s happening with Transnistria.

Cyprus has become an EU member despite having a territorial dispute (with Turkey). Moldova can do the same,”  he said.

Moldova and Ukraine were invited to start membership negotiations with the EU last year.

Transnistria broke away from Moldova in 1990 fearing it wanted to reunite with Romania.

A war broke out in 1991 between the separatists and government forces, leaving 1,500 dead.

Russia has some 1,500 troops stationed in the region, which is not internationally recognized, even by Russia.
