Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean on Monday announced he was stepping down after his pro-European party won crucial parliamentary elections last month and will leave politics.

“My term ends simultaneously with that of the current government’s. Immediately after we approve the new government in parliament, I will resign my mandate,”  Recean, 51, said.

The Action and Solidarity Party, led by President Maia Sandu, won a majority and is expected to name a new prime minister soon to advance Moldova’s EU ambitions.

Recean, who has served as prime minister since early 2023,  said he plans to return to the private sector once the new cabinet is approved to ensure a smooth transition within the ruling party, which has pledged to strengthen Moldova’s Western orientation amid regional tensions and economic challenges.

Parliament speaker Igor Grosu, who heads the PAS, thanked  Recean for “very good and effective cooperation” and said a future government would require harmony and new steps from the party.

According to him, PAS “at the appropriate time” will hold consultations with President Maia Sandu to present the candidacy of the future prime minister, which the party “would deem appropriate”.

President Maia Sandu thanked Recean for agreeing to stand beside us in these difficult years, calling him “the most suitable person to lead the government and head state institutions so that we can navigate through the numerous crises”.

In the parliamentary elections on September 28, Dorin Recean ran in second place on the PAS list, losing to the Speaker of Parliament and the party leader Igor Grosu.

PAS won with 50.20% of the votes in Sept, 28 parliamentary election followed by “Patriotic Electoral Bloc”, which scored about 24.2% and favors closer ties with Russia.
