President Nicușor Dan says the new US ambassador to Romania, Darryl Nirenberg, will take office in March.

“At the beginning of March, the new United States Ambassador to Romania will arrive, and this will energize the relationship we have. At some point, which is not far off, these economic projects will reach a level of maturity that will allow them to be carried out,” teh president said.

Darryl Nirenberg was confirmed as the United States Ambassador to Bucharest at the end of last year.

“Congratulations to Darryl Nirenberg on his confirmation as United States Ambassador to Romania. We look forward to his contribution to strengthening American policy and representing President Trump in the relationship with one of our closest allies,” the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest stated.

Nirenberg, a diplomat with over 40 years of experience in foreign policy, was nominated by Trump in May, following the departure of the former Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec after Trump won re-election as U.S. president

Romania has a strategic partnership with the United States and many Romanians are pro-American. But there is also concern about the potential spread of Russian aggression in the event of a Trump-Putin peace deal that is favorable to Russia.

Bucharest’s pro-Western government has allied itself with European states which want security guarantees to prevent a fresh outbreak of hostilities on the continent.
