Romanian journalists were angered by the words of Zsolt Bayer, a close associate of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and co-founder of Fidesz, who stated Crimea is as important for Russians as it is for Hungarians Transylvania (a historical region in the north-west of Romania, where the Hungarian minority lives compactly).

„The Crimean peninsula is a symbol for [президента РФ Владимира] Putin is like Transylvania for us”, Bayer stated on air of the TV channel and main Fidesz news outlet HIR TV.

Reviewers of the Romanian portal G4Media.ro Andreea Pavel and Mihai Roman immediately attacked the politician.  The comparison by Orban’s ally has been dubbed a „revisionist message”. The New York Times journalist Benjamin Novak, who writes articles about Hungary, also intervened in the situation. He asked Bucharest to respond to Bayer’s statement.
